For, a Hero Fears No Bullets

“Oh 英雄本色! 好看! 周润发,很帅!”

My dad, despite his broken English, is a huge fan of war films and action flicks, prefers his movie appetite to be everything Western, seldom giving praises to Hong Kong movies or shows. A Better Tomorrow by John Woo (1986) is one of the rare movies which my mention of it garnered a positive response from him.

While watching the movie, I felt that the main protagonist is Ho (played by Ti Lung) but I was puzzled that the movie disc cover had the focus on Chow Yun Fat, who plays Mark. Isn’t the story about Ho being the hero as he was the circumstantial villain for the sake of supporting his family and suffering imprisonment for his subordinate, out of the loyalty he held towards friends?

But as the movie goes along I understood the reason why Chow Yun Fat seemed to be in the spotlight instead of Ti Lung, as Mark was the embodiment of guts. I was astonished with the shootout scenes - Chow Yun Fat was too suave! His courage to seek revenge for Ho and the seemingly ability to dodge all bullets (well, except for the few that crippled him and of course the ones that killed him in the end) was impeccable. Now I could understand why my dad found Chow Yun Fat to be really 帅.

A Better Tomorrow had a profound influence in the movie scene of Hong Kong, with many sequels and remakes ensued. I went onto Youtube and managed to find video clips of the sequels, as well as the remakes.

For the movie and sequels (A Better Tomorrow 2, A Better Tomorrow 3 Love & Death in Saigon) I posted the videos of shootouts as I find this the signature for action flicks. Heroes shine in showers of bullets!

While for the remakes, I managed to find the trailer for the Korean remake Mujeokja by Song Hae-Sung (2010), and also the clip for the India remake Aatish: Feel the Fire by Sanjay Gupta (1994).
