Il Mare by Hyun-Seung Lee (2000) is a very simple film dealing with a complex theory of time-travelling. Il Mare, a beautiful house along the seaside, houses the protagonists who are apart by two years, corresponding by sending letters through the magical mailbox.
The film eludes a quaint charm of beauty, from the picturesque house by the sea, the mannerism of the characters (Eun-Joo being the gentle feminine lead with wavy dreamy tresses and pining over lost love, Sung-Hyun being the charismatic guy who has an estranged relationship with his dad) and even the way the protagonists fall in love – by writing each other letters.
The simple plot provides problems for the story (for example, if they are able to change events in the past or future, wouldn’t that change events along the way and mess up with time itself, or are they infinitely trapped in time that reoccurs by itself?), but I enjoyed the film nevertheless, it has really pretty visuals!
I love the Il Mare house; it would be much of a dream to be able to stay in such a house if I ever get the chance. Being of quite a hermit nature, I think it is splendid to have a house by the seaside, far away from the buzzing cities, with waves accompanying you and the sea to look at when you open your eyes.
I googled for houses by the sea/lake, if I could, I would gladly love to live in such houses one day.
